Mounjaro – A Rival To Wegovy
In the world of weight-loss injections, there is a new kid on the block: a rival to Wegovy – called Mounjaro. This new drug is yet another “solution” that promises significant results but comes with its own set of concerns and potential risks. As we at ProLongevity are dedicated to promoting natural and sustainable health solutions, we feel that it’s most important to provide a balanced perspective on Mounjaro, its benefits, and its potential downsides.
What Is Mounjaro?
Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide (that’s the same active that’s found in both Wegovy and Ozempic). But Mounjaro’s unique selling point is the inclusion of a second active ingredient: tirzepatide. The combination of two actives are designed to mimic the actions of two naturally occurring hormones in the intestine, GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).
These hormones play a crucial role in regulating hunger and satiety, the feeling of being full. By mimicking GIP and GLP-1, Mounjaro helps users feel full more quickly after eating and maintains this feeling for longer. Additionally, the drug slows down the digestive process, which can aid in portion control and reduce the frequency of hunger pangs.
How Does Mounjaro Compare to Wegovy?
While both Mounjaro and Wegovy are designed to assist with weight loss by influencing appetite and digestion, they do so in slightly different ways due to their different active ingredients. Wegovy’s main ingredient, semaglutide, is also found in the diabetes medication Ozempic, albeit in a lower dosage. Mounjaro’s tirzepatide, on the other hand, is a newer compound that targets two hormones instead of just one.
One of the most significant points of comparison between these two drugs comes from the SURPASS-2 clinical trial, which directly compared tirzepatide (Mounjaro) with semaglutide (Wegovy). The trial found that Mounjaro was effective at promoting weight loss, but it also showed a slightly higher incidence of serious side effects compared to Wegovy.
We previously discussed the potential dangers of Wegovy here: https://www.prolongevity.co.uk/wegovy-for-weight-loss/
The Side Effects of Mounjaro
As with any medication, especially one that manipulates the body’s natural processes, Mounjaro is not without its risks. Common side effects reported by users include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These gastrointestinal issues can range from mild discomfort to more severe symptoms that may require medical attention.
More concerning, however, are the potential for severe side effects. These include acute organ failure, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), diabetic retinopathy (damage to the eyes due to diabetes), and gastroparesis (a condition that affects the stomach muscles and prevents proper stomach emptying). These conditions are serious and can have long-lasting impacts on a person’s health.
Even more alarming is the fact that, according to drugwatch.com, there have been 74 reported deaths associated with Mounjaro use. While it’s important to note that these are reports and may not be conclusively linked to the drug, the number is significant enough to warrant caution. Additionally, animal studies have shown an increased risk of certain thyroid cancers when using tirzepatide, raising further concerns about the long-term safety of this drug.
But there’s another issue here: clinical trials are carried out over weeks and months (rarely years) and in relatively small numbers of carefully-selected subjects. Yet these drugs are being used at scale in much wider populations than the clinical trials. We have literally no evidence about the long-term benefits or the side effects and we won’t truly be able to tell for a decade, perhaps longer. Why risk it?
Celebrities are at it again
Despite these risks, Mounjaro has gained a following among celebrities, with high-profile names like Oprah Winfrey, Rebel Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, and even Elon Musk reportedly having used it to help them shed the pounds. The influence of celebrities in popularising weight loss solutions is well-documented, and it’s no surprise that Mounjaro is becoming a household name as a result.
However, while celebrities have access to round-the-clock medical supervision and support, the average person does not. Add to that the fact that people are finding it harder and harder to get a GP appointment, and often end up using Mounjaro without medical assistance, the risks associated with Mounjaro are much greater.
Why ProLongevity Advocates for Natural Weight Loss Solutions
Ok, we understand the appeal of quick fixes when it comes to weight loss, and it’s not hard to see why a drug like Mounjaro, promising significant weight loss with little effort, would be attractive. However, we strongly believe that the risks associated with such medications often far outweigh the benefits.
Sustainable, long-term health and weight loss can and should be achieved naturally, without resorting to potentially harmful drugs. We advocate for a holistic approach to health, one that includes balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and lifestyle changes that promote overall well-being. Not so glamorous sounding, is it? But there is absolutely no need to risk your life and health for the promise of easy weight loss.
